DECLARING YOUR MAJOR: Make an academic plan
Follow these step-by-step instructions to create an academic plan for your Biological Sciences
major:
| 1. |
Download an academic planner and a degree checklist for the major you wish to declare. |
| |
|
| 2. |
Use the academic planner to plot out your course of study based
on the major requirements listed on the degree checklist. To get you started we've provided
these sample schedules.
Make sure you are scheduling your courses in the quarters they are actually offered. Use the quarter notations on the degree checklist, ie. (FWS), to schedule your courses correctly. You can also check our biology course index and the general catalog to find when courses are being offered.
Make sure to check course prerequisites. They are listed in the general catalog. |
| Some important information to consider when planning your courses: |
|
- 3 science courses in one quarter is a heavy quarter. Space your general education courses out through your academic career to avoid overloading one quarter. We recommend two science courses and one ge course per quarter.
- You have university and college requirements that must be satisfied in conjunction with your degree requirements. Check the Navigator for campus requirements and your college office for your college requirements.
- To enroll in less than 12 or more than 19 units in a quarter you may need approval from your college office.
- To enroll beyond your expected graduation term (as posted in your student portal), requires an enrollment extension approved by your college.
- Plan carefully and get your introductory courses done early so you can take the electives you are most interested in.
|
| 3. |
After you have planned out your course work, decide how you intend to satisfy your senior exit requirement. If you are intending to use the senior thesis option to satisfy your requirement you should plan on taking BIOL 183L or BIOL 186L, the Undergraduate Research Courses, during your junior or senior year. If you are planning on taking the GRE or MCAT, you should plan for a light quarter when you are taking the exam to leave time to study. |
| If you are not able to make your own academic plan, come to our drop in advising for assistance in getting started or for a review of your current plan. Drop in advising is Monday - Friday 1:00-3:00 and Wednesday 10:00-12:00 in Thimann labs room 387. |
