GETTING STARTED: Sample schedules for students starting Biology

The following sample schedules are intended to help students beginning in the Biological Sciences. Each sample is tailored to your placement in Math and your high school Chemistry and Biology preparation. To determine your placement you must have taken at least the Math Placement Exam. There are optional self-assessment exams to help you determine where to begin in both Chemistry and Biology.

Plan One is for students who place into Math 3, are recommended to take Biology 3 and have little to no Chemistry preparation. Students not ready to begin Calculus in the fall should postpone beginning Chemistry 1A until winter when they have a better foundation in Math. These students might consider taking the Chemistry self-assessment exam.
  Fall Winter * Spring
  MATH 3 CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M
general education course MATH 11A MATH 11B
college core course BIOL 3 general education course

Plan Two is for students who place into Math 11A are recommended to take Biology 3 and have had little to no Chemistry preparation. Students who intend to take Biol 3 are strongly encouraged to take it in the winter as that is the only quarter it is offered. These students might consider taking the Chemistry self-assessment exam.
  Fall Winter * Spring
  MATH 11A CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M
general education course MATH 11B MATH 22 (not required for all Bio majors)
college core course BIOL 3 general education course

Plan Three is for students who place into Math 11A are recommended to take Biology 3 and had high school Chemistry. Students who intend to take Biol 3 are strongly encouraged to take it in the winter as that is the only quarter it is offered.
  Fall Winter Spring
  CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M CHEM 1C/N
  MATH 11A BIOL 3 MATH 11B
college core course general education course general education course

Plan Four is for students who place into Math 11A and are recommended to start with the Biology 20-series and had high school Chemistry.
  Fall Winter Spring
  CHEM 1A CHEM 1B/M CHEM 1C/N
  MATH 11A MATH 11B BIOL 20A
college core course general education course general education course

* IF YOU DO NOT PASS ALL YOUR FALL COURSES WITH GRADES OF B OR BETTER, WE WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ENROLLING IN ALL THREE CHEM, MATH, AND BIO COURSES IN WINTER QUARTER. Instead we would suggest you take Chem 1A, Bio 3 and a General Education Course.

For continuations of all these plans as they relate to your particular major, check out the degree checklists and their associated two-year sample schedules. The best scheduling strategy is to balance your general education courses with your major's introductory requirements. In general, you will want to pair two science/math courses with one non-science course per quarter. It's important to begin your science coursework early to avoid delaying your graduation.
