Biological Sciences Undergraduate Program |
Early preparation affords students opportunities.... Students that plan ahead and get a jump on their studies by completing some course requirements before coming to UCSC can often create flexibile academic plans that can accommodate particitpating in special programs like Education Abroad, taking advantage of field and research oppportunities, and/or simply enrolling in more upper-division electives once they are here. Education Abroad: - by completing introductory courses early on, students can often create an academic plan that allows for spending a year abroad. Biological Sciences accepts credit from foreign institutions affiliated with EAP and has already articulated some programs (Tropical Ecology Costa Rica, Marine Ecology Queensland, Australia, and the Cook Program in Australia) for biology course credit. Field and Research Opportunities: Special research opportunities and field programs can be included in academic plans that have room for extra courses. Our Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Research Lab course provides on-going faculty-mentored research experience and is available to our exceptional freshmen and sophmores advanced in their studies. Students can also participate in field research in French Polynesia as part of our Marine Ecology Field Quarter - but the course requires scientific scuba diving certification in advance. Students must be able to accommodate the scuba certification series in their academic plan to participate in this course. Electives: The sooner students satsify their introductory requirements
the sooner they can move on to more specialized upper-division electives.
A student's most valuable coursework is their upper-division electives.
Our students have always noted that working with faculty in small
courses (10-16 students), doing hands-on experiments in the lab, and conducting
field study in small faculty-lead groups has been the highlight of their
studies in the Biological Sciences. The fewer introductory course requirments
you need to take, the more upper-division electives you can enroll in. Getting a head start can also save students in tuition costs... With fee increases and the pending unit limits being discussed by the state legislature, it is becoming more and more critical that students make the most of their allotted time at UCSC. By taking Advanced Placement courses in high school and completing introductory requirements at the less-expensive community college tuition rates, students can be sure they finish their degree "on time". Biological Sciences degree programs are requirement-intensive; without advance placement or transfer credit, they can take students all four years to complete (two years for transfer students). Any requirments you can satsify prior to coming to the university can help ensure you complete your degree in normative time. Still have questions???? The best way to get your questions answered is to come to summer orientation. If you attend orientation, you will meet department advisers, college advisers, you can get a feel for the campus, enroll in courses, take placement exams, etc. Spring is the most busy time for the undergraduate advising office and the advisers do not have time to meet with prospective students individually. If you are unable to attend orientation and still have questions after reviewing our website, please feel free to email us. More information for prospective high school students...
