DEGREE PROGRAMS: B.A. or B.S.?

The degree requirements are more rigorous for a Bachelor of Science. Some people advise a Bachelor of Science if you are intending on going on to graduate education, but we have no evidence that a Bachleor of Science improves a student's chances for acceptance to graduate school. It's best to check with the graduate school you wish to attend to see if they have a preference for a Bachelor of Science degree.

Here is the difference in requirements:

The Bachalaureate of Sciences:
- requires between 9-10 upper division courses
- requires 3 quarters of Calculus (Math 22 in addition to a general calculus sequence)
- requires 3 quarters of Physics (the entire 6 series)

The Bachalaureate of Arts:
- requires between 8-9 upper division courses
- requires 2 quarter of Calculus
- requires 2 quarters of Physics

NOTE: If you are still unsure which degree option you should choose, ask your faculty advisor! The faculty select students for admission to our graduate program and can give you a sense of how the different degree paths are weighted in the scientific community.
