PROGRAM UPDATE 2009-2010

Biological Sciences has proposed the following changes effective Fall 2009...

Introductory Biology:
BIOE 3 Concepts in Biology will no longer be offered, all students will begin the introductory biology sequence with either BIOL 20A Cell & Molecular Biology or BIOE 20C Ecology & Evolution.

The following **NEW** courses will be offered this year:

BIOE 149 Disease Ecology offered in Winter
Focuses on the ecological and evolutionary processes that drive the transmission of pathogens between hosts, the impact of disease on host populations, and what causes the emergence of an infectious disease. The course includes a theoretical framework, a description of field techniques, and discussion of a broad range of wildlife and human diseases including malaria, West Nile virus, Lyme disease, HIV, avian influenza (bird flu), Chikungunya, tuberculosis, chytridiomycosis and Ebola. Prerequisites: BIOL 20A, BIOE 20B, BIOE 20C and BIOE 107. Instructor: A. Marm Kilpatrick

BIOL 21L Phage Genomics Lab offered in Fall, Winter and Spring
This is an honors lab course sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute looking at sequencing the genome of bacterial samples from our environment and cataloging the genomes with the Center for Disease Control. The instructors, Manny Ares and Grant Hartzog, are targeting entering frosh with high AP Biology scores by sending them email inviting them to enroll. If you are a well-prepared entering freshman planning on completeing a Biological Sciences degree program, and are interested in applying, contact the instructors. This lab is intended to taken along with the introductory biology sequence. Enrollment by permission of instructor. Instructors: Manny Ares & Grant Hartzog

BIOL 115M Molecular Genetics Lab offered in Spring
This course gives students hands-on experience in molecular genetics techniques, including: DNA isolation, cloning, and transformation; plasmid isolation; colony hybridization with nucleic acid and antibody probes, restriction digest, agarose and SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, Western blot, protein purification and protein quantification. Prerequisites: BIOL 20A, BIOE 20B, 20C, BIOL 100 and 105. Enrollment restricted to biological sciences and affiliated majors, non-majors by permission. Enrollment limited to 20. Instructor: Jeremy Lee

BIOL 178L Protocols in Stem Cell Biology offered in Winter
This laboratory class provides students with hands-on experience in embryonic stem cell culture methods and techniques. Students will learn to grow and passage mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells and perform established protocols used to differentiate mES cells into cardiac muscle cells and neurons. Prerequisites: Instructor: Dave Feldheim

The following courses will have additional offerings in 2009-2010:

BIOE 80N Human Health & Nutrition - Winter & Spring Quarter
BIOE 80P Infectious Diseases & Human Populations - Winter & Spring Quarter
BIOE 107 Ecology - Winter & Spring Quarter
BIOL 109 Evolution - Fall & Winter Quarter
BIOL 181 Computational Biology Tools - Fall & Spring

The following courses will NOT be offered in 2009-2010:

BIOE 3 Concepts in Biology - cancelled.
BIOE 114/L Herpetology & Lab - offered next in Winter 2012.
BIOE 124/L Marine Plankton - due to Mary Silver's retirement, this course is indefinitely suspended.
BIOE 133/L Exercies Physiology & Lab - indefinitely suspended.
BIOE 150/L Ecological Field Methods & Lab - instructor instead teaching BIOE 151 Ecology & Conservation Supercourse Spring 2010.
BIOE 188 Supervised Teaching & Writing in Biology Courses - cancelled.
BIOL 70 Introducion to Psychobiology - cancelled.
BIOL 80H The Human Genome - course transferred to BME, now offered only as BME 80H.
BIOL 89W Cinical Healthcare: Writing Intensive - cancelled.
BIOL 109L Yeast Molecular Genetics Lab - not offered this academic year.
